Hesse calls for you to travel through Europe for free with DiscoverEU”!
The “DiscoverEU” campaign, launched by the European Commission as part of the Erasmus+ program, gives young people an exciting opportunity: they can apply for one of a total of 35,500 free travel tickets. These tickets allow holders to travel across Europe, primarily by train, for up to 30 days between March 1, 2025 and May 31, 2026. Heike Hofmann, the Hessian youth minister, especially invites all 18-year-olds who are celebrating their birthday this year to take part in this project.
“The European Union and an open Europe are significant achievements,” emphasized Hofmann in a statement. At a time when many people are once again focusing more on national issues, awareness of the benefits of an open Europe is more important than ever. Hofmann further explains that the project offers young people the opportunity to get to know Europe's cultural diversity and gain important experiences. She calls on all suitable young people in Hesse to apply and take advantage of this unique opportunity.
Important details about the application
The deadline for applications is October 16, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. Participants receive not only the ticket for the trip, but also a DiscoverEU youth card, which offers numerous additional benefits, including discounts on cultural events, sports, accommodation and meals.
In order to take part in this campaign, applicants must be born in 2006 and either be a citizen of a member state of the European Union or a resident of a non-EU country associated with the Erasmus+ program. These countries include Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey. Erasmus+ itself is a major EU program that supports education, training, youth and sport in Europe.
The initiative aims to promote the mobility of young people and give them the opportunity not only to experience Europe but also to understand it. An open Europe not only offers freedom of travel, but also access to different cultures and educational opportunities. “With ‘DiscoverEU’, the European Commission is showing how important these values are,” adds the minister.
