Baden-Württemberg loses thousands: Where are the emigrants?
Since 2000, around 136,000 Germans have left the state of Baden-Württemberg on the country. Last year 2023 there were 26,400 people who packed their suitcases, which the highest number has been in years, as the Swabian . This rapidly increasing emigration is mainly registered in urban and rural areas, with the greatest losses in the districts of Constance, Lörrach and Waldshut as well as in the Stuttgart City Circle. There, over three quarters of emigration hikes to near Switzerland, followed by Austria, France and Spain as preferred destinations.
This development illustrates a persistent trend that is not only influenced by economic factors, but also of temporary stays abroad for professional or family reasons. As the Stuttgart Journal , around 15,800 Germans have returned to Baden-Württemberg, in 2023, Which results in a net medication loss of around 10,600 people. Switzerland's attraction remains unbroken, with around 5,100 Germans who migrated there. This mobility throws questions about the motives of the emigrants and their life situation abroad, while Baden-Württemberg has a continued loss of residents.
