The Guardian withdraws from X: A sign against hatred and lies!
The British news platform The Guardian has taken a dramatic step and announced that it will no longer publish content on the controversial platform X. The reason? The “disturbing content” spread there, including racism and conspiracy theories. In an official statement, the newspaper explained that the US elections at the beginning of November were decisive for this decision.
“The US presidential election has only underscored what we have long thought: X is a toxic media platform,” said The Guardian. Owner Elon Musk is accused of using his influence to manipulate political discussion. The newspaper believes that the disadvantages of having a presence on X outweigh the advantages and that its resources could be better used to promote journalism elsewhere.
A farewell with consequences
Although The Guardian no longer actively posts on X, users can still share articles from the newspaper. The platform is also occasionally embedded in its own reports to reflect the nature of live reporting. The main @guardian account remains, but displays a message stating that "this account has been archived" and visitors are being redirected to the site.
With 10.7 million followers, The Guardian is the first major British media company to leave the platform following Musk's takeover in 2022. Critics accuse Musk of encouraging lies and hate speech in his use of the platform. Musk himself responded to the decision by saying The Guardian was "irrelevant" and calling the newspaper a "painfully vile propaganda machine." During the US elections, Musk supported Donald Trump and promoted Republicans with misleading posts.
