Wolves in the Mühlviertel: Böhmerwaldrudel confirmed again by photo trap!

Ulrichsberg, Österreich - The return of the wolves in Upper Austria is impressively documented by a current event. A wolf pack, known as the "Böhmerwaldrudel", was photographed with the help of a photo trap in the municipal area of Ulrichsberg. This picture marks the first visible sign after a year in which no documented sightings took place. According to 5min.at , however, indication of the wolves in the upper Mühlviertel had already compressed. At the same time confirmed sightings and a wild rise in Aigen-Schlägl, which is proven by means of a DNA sample, that the animals are probably not migrated.

A total of four wolf packs in Upper Austria are now officially confirmed. This reports the agricultural councilor Michaela Langer-Weninger and underpins the importance of scientific wolf monitoring that is carried out in this region. The monitoring is intended to create a comprehensive data and factual basis that is necessary for effective wolf management. The goal is a harmonious living together between wolf and humans, especially in the areas of agriculture and alpine pastures.

status of the wolf population in Europe

The monitoring for the spread of wolves shows that a total of 184 wolf packs, 47 wolf pairs and 22 resident individual wolves were recorded in Germany in the monitoring year 2022/2023. These figures are based on the published information of the DBBW. Historically, the wolf was one of the most widespread mammals in Europe, but had to be greatly decimated by strong conflicts with people. Nevertheless, the wolf has also been seen as a strictly protected species in Germany since 1980, and the stocks have recovered since then. In 1998 the first wolf couple settled again in Saxony, and in 2000 the first puppies were detected.

The current situation of the wolf population in Upper Austria and Europe shows that despite the challenges that the coexistence with wolves brings with it, a positive signal for the return of these animals is sent. Effective management through monitoring and legal framework conditions will be crucial for the fact that both humans and wolves can coexist in the future.
