European values and their meaning

The European Union sets itself the task of promoting a society based on basic values such as freedom, democracy and human rights. These goals are stipulated in Article 2 of the Lisbon Treaty and are also reflected in the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The Union not only strives for a peaceful coexistence, but also the creation of an internal market and ensuring social justice and equality.

According to a Eurobarometer survey from 2018, peace, human rights and democracy are the most valuable aspects that the citizens of the EU combine with European identity. 39%of those surveyed called peace as the most important value, followed by human rights (33%) and democracy (32%). This survey illustrates how important it is for citizens that the EU functions as a guarantee for these values.

Future of the European Union

The EU has also committed itself to eliminating social injustices and improving the protection of the environment, while at the same time promoting technical progress. The core goals are to create a safe common environment in which the citizens can live without internal borders. Solidarity and mutual respect between the Member States are more in demand at a time when international tensions increase.

The challenges against which Europe is facing requires that the members of the Union work together in their efforts. In order to meet these challenges, the achievements of 60 years of Europe are not only to be celebrated, but also to be understood as an incentive to continue to promote and defend the common values and goals of the European Union.
