Sad farewell: David Johansen, legend of the New York Dolls, died
The influential singer David Johansen, known as the front man of the Glam Punk band New York Dolls, died on Friday at the age of 75 in his home in New York. This was confirmed by his daughter Leah Hennessey and his wife Mara Hennessey. Johansen died "in the hands of his family, surrounded by music, flowers and love" of natural causes after fighting for almost a decade against health problems, including an advanced cancer and a brain tumor. According to Leah Hennessey, he had suffered a fall in November, in which he suffered two back breaks and has been bedridden since then. In February she launched a donation campaign to collect financial support for his care services required around the clock, such as Exxpress.at reported.
Johansen was not only the voice of the New York Dolls, which was founded in 1972 by him and Johnny Thunder, but also an important player in music history. The band is considered one of the first US punk bands and significantly influenced the music scene. Her albums "New York Dolls" (1973) and "Too Much too SoON" (1974) included classics such as "Personality Crisis" and contributed to the establishment of the glam-punk genre. Johansen also had success in the film, including in the comedy "Scrooged" with Bill Murray. After separating the band in 1976, he developed a successful solo career under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter, which brought hits like "Hot Hot Hot", like rolling stone executed.
The New York Dolls experienced a reunion in 2004, but after the death of Sylvain Sylvain in 2021 Johansen was the last surviving original member of the band. His influence on music and the cultural heritage is considered incomparable, and his energy and creativity will live on in the memories of him. Johansen leaves an impressive musical legacy that inspired generations, and his death marks the end of an era of one of the most important artists in the punk genre.
