Schafberg water tank: Green oasis for Vienna and climate protection in one!

The extended water container Schafberg in Hernals was put into operation around a year ago and, with its new capacity of a total of 60 million liters of drinking water from the Alps, represents a future -oriented project. This project is of crucial importance not only for the drinking water supply of the Viennese population, but also a prime example of adapting to the challenges of climate change. Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky recently praised the project as a key factor for climate adjustment, since it guarantees the securing of water supply for the growing city of Vienna.

With the expansion of the water tank, the storage volume is almost tripled. The high source water from the Lower Austrian-Styrian Alps ensures the water supply of large parts of Ottakring, Hernals and Währing, while the districts of Floridsdorf and Donaustadt also benefit indirectly. The city of Vienna is investing up to 100 million euros annually in the drinking water infrastructure, the infrastructure continues to be modernized and the expansion of national transport lines advanced in order to also meet future water.

sustainability and biodiversity

As part of the project, not only was the water storage capacity expanded. On the area of the water tank, room for new trees, shrubs and habitats for animals was also created. For this purpose, 42 new trees were planted, including types such as almond, wild apple, bird cherry and winter linden. These measures not only promote biodiversity, but also contribute to improving air quality by offering food sources and habitats for different animal species.

Part of the property is used for the planned photovoltaic system of Vienna Energie, which aims to create renewable energies. This is another step towards the smart city strategy of Vienna, which is intended to integrate climate protection and sustainable urban development. The city will continue to examine and expand the possibilities for the use of renewable energies on the water containers. This is in accordance with the drinking water strategy "Wiener Wasser 2050", which is intended to ensure security of supply in a constantly changing urban environment.

urban adaptation measures

The adaptation strategies in Vienna aim to prepare the city for future climatic challenges. In addition to the water supply, measures to improve the microclimate in urban areas are also implemented. So -called "vulnerable groups" as children, older people and socially isolated people apply. The city relies on more green areas, the intensive greening and the creation of new parking spaces to improve the quality of life of the Viennese citizens and to face the challenges of climate change.

Thanks to targeted measures, such as the tree planting offensive with 25,000 new city trees by 2025, another component of the Smart Klima City strategy becomes visible. Vienna continuously expands its infrastructure and promotes sustainable solutions in order to remain resilient in view of heat waves and other climatic changes. The Schafberg water tank is therefore not only a technical, but also an ecological highlight for the city.

The investments to renew the pipe network and the current location of the water tanks ensure that Vienna can continue to provide the required water in the future. The city thus remains a pioneer in the connection of water supply with comprehensive climate protection strategies.
