Customs inspection on a prison construction site: uncovering illegal work and more!

A dramatic use of financial control for undeclared work has caused a stir at the construction site of the new correctional facility in Rottweil! At the end of October, 48 customs officers closely examined the employment relationships of around 100 employees from twelve companies. The inspection, announced on November 11, shows that the authorities are taking decisive action against undeclared work.

Trial with no way out

The imposing detention walls of the Rottweil prison, which have already been fully constructed, have made the customs officers' work much easier. The construction workers were unable to escape inspection because the site did not have to be secured during the inspection. “The inspection was carried out in an orderly and smooth manner,” said the Singen main customs office in its press release. A clear victory for the inspectors!

Violations in sight

The first evaluations of the inspection have already brought to light some alarming violations. There were indications of missing identification documents, possible violations of residence permits and even cases of bogus self-employment among subcontractors. The customs officers are now in close contact with other authorities and the pension insurance company in order to compare the data collected with the companies' payroll and financial documents. But the final results are still a long time coming, as it will take a few weeks to examine the documents.
