A long success story
Mickey Mouse is not only known for his current success. The first issue of Mickey Mouse appeared in Germany in late summer 1951 and represented a milestone: it was the first colorful monthly magazine in the German magazine market, produced in four-color printing. At a price of 75 pfennigs, these magazines were more expensive than the average hourly wage, but this did not stop readers from selling over 130,000 copies immediately Daily Mirror reported.
Under the direction of Erika Fuchs, the first editor-in-chief, the characters were given German names, such as “Dagobert Duck”. Mickey Mouse quickly established itself and achieved a print run of around 400,000 copies. Their publication frequency was increased to fortnightly in 1956 and later to weekly, despite competition from magazines such as “Fix und Foxi” and “Yps”.
Current challenges and opportunities
There were setbacks from time to time in the development of the magazine. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, circulation in the GDR rose to over 200,000 copies, but in the last decade total circulation fell to under 100,000 copies. From 2018 onwards, the magazines were only published every 14 days. Nevertheless, market analysis shows that Mickey Mouse has regained popularity among children, especially through new cartoons and comics.
Mickey Mouse currently remains the most successful children's magazine in Europe with a total of 1.3 billion copies sold. With the introduction of Wincent Weiss as a comic star, there is little doubt that the magazine will continue to be an important part of children's reading culture and adapt to the changes in the market.
