Union clearly wins in the Bundestag election - SPD crashes to historical deep!
After the turbulent elections for the Bundestag election 2025, in which the Union took the lead under the new top candidate Friedrich Merz with 28.5 percent, the first exploratory talks between the CDU and the SPD have started. The talks took place on Friday and are to be continued in the coming week. The SPD politician Achim Post described the talks as "open, honest and constructive", but emphasized that content was agreed not to disclose. The explorations are classified as open to results and it remains to be seen which topics will be discussed.
The choice has serious consequences: The SPD landed at a historically low value at 16.4 percent and has little possibilities without the Union or the AfD realizing a government formation. The downward trend was dramatic for the party after Olaf Scholz was voted out as a chancellor. Only the AfD could almost double its result with 20.8 percent, while the FDP and the Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance could not exceed the five percent hurdle and would therefore not be entered into the Bundestag, as Infranken also reported.
speed is required
Merz plans to form a new government until Easter, while SPD foreign politician Michael Roth demands more pace in government formation. Roth warned that Germany must quickly be decisive again to secure its role in the EU and global matters. The member of the Bundestag from Lower Saxony, Stephan Weil, was skeptical whether the SPD would enter a coalition while Merz remains optimistic, even if he warns of a "huge challenge" in the coalition negotiations. The differences between the parties, especially with regard to migration and debt policy, are considerable and require careful negotiations.
