Trump and Selenskyj: Conversation about peace or new conflicts?
In the latest part of the continuing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, there were significant developments that affected both diplomatic and military dimensions. Both Russia and Ukraine have approved a temporary stop of the attacks on energy systems. This agreement was made after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj. Selenskyj announced that both countries are interested in a ceasefire in the energy sector, but insist that the details of the USA must be clearly defined. As a result, however, drone attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine were also recorded, which questions the credibility of this agreement, as Selenskyj himself emphasized.
In another context, it was reported that both countries returned 372 prisoners of war as part of a prisoner exchange. This was done after the conversation between Trump and Vladimir Putin, which is seen as part of an attempt to defuse the tensions and to consider possible negotiations on a more comprehensive ceasefire. While Putin threatens to say further areas in Ukraine if Kiev does not meet his demands, the negotiations remain tense. The Ukrainian President rejected the demands as a "red line", according to the motto that the recognition of the loss areas is not up for discussion, which is strongly underpinning the position of Ukraine.
upgrading and support for Ukraine
In Germany, the approval for a multi -billion dollar support package for Ukraine is also prepared. The Federal Ministry of Finance plans to convene the budget committee to release another three billion euros for military support in this and up to 8.3 billion euros by 2029. These are crucial steps to strengthen Ukraine in its defense against the Russian attacks. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, however, criticized the ceasefire agreement between Trump and Putin as ineffective, since the Russian attacks on the energy infrastructure in Ukraine have already been continued.
