Fatal weekend: two motorcyclists were killed in Austria

Last Friday and Saturday, several tragic motorcycle accidents occurred in Austria, in which two motorcyclists lost their lives. According to vienna.at A 43-year-old man from Germany died on Friday Afternoon on Metnitzer Landesstraße (L62) in the St. Veit district on the Glan. He had overturned around 2:00 p.m. for unknown reasons and came to lie under the guiding rail, where he died at the scene of the accident.

The following Saturday, a 77-year-old motorcyclist, was accidentally an accident in Nauders, Tyrol. He was part of a nine -member group that drove towards Switzerland. In light rain, he unexpectedly got into the lane of oncoming traffic, got into skid and fell. The biker hurled 25 meters across the street and also succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident. The federal road 185 had to be closed for more than two hours.

other accidents and injuries

In addition to the fatal incidents, there were further accidents on Saturday. In Pettenbach, Upper Austria, a 38-year-old motorcycle driver was seriously injured when he collided with a left-handed car. In St. Aegyd on the Neuwalde, two motorcyclists (35 and 38 years old) had to be flown from Styria to the hospital after falling. Also in Gerlos, Tyrol, two motorcycle drivers-a 70-year-old biker from England and a 56-year-old German-plunged in a side collision and suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries. In another accident series, a 22-year-old motorcyclist lost in Rankweil, Vorarlberg, control of his vehicle, touched a tree and contracted a serious thigh injury.

The alarming numbers behind these accidents are part of a larger trend. According to the ÖAMTC , the number of fatal motorcycle accidents in 2024 rose to 78 and almost 80 percent of these accidents were self -indebted. Over 96 percent of the motorcyclists killed are male, on average 47 years old. The main causes of such accidents are not adapted speed, misunderstood overtaking maneuvers and priority injuries.

Review of the accident statistics

A comprehensive analysis of traffic safety in Austria shows that the proportion of fatal motorcycle accidents in all traffic accidents rose from 7 percent in 1995 to over 20 percent in 2023. At the same time, the total number of traffic fatalities has decreased among other road users, while the number of deadly crashed motorcyclists almost stagnated. These facts urgently need the need for educational work and measures to improve driving technology, such as special motorcycle training.

According to a current accident statistics of the bmi there was a total of 477 traffic accidents on Pentecost weekend with personal injury, which corresponds to an increase of 7 percent compared to the previous year. By June 9, 2025, 133 traffic fatalities have already been counted, compared to 114 in the previous year. Probably the most common causes of accidents are carelessness, non -adapted speed and priority injuries.

In order to increase the safety of motorcyclists, it is strongly recommended to improve the infrastructure, offer more driving safety training and to better sensitize road users. This is the only way to significantly reduce the number of accidents and thus also of the fatal incidental.
