Thousands celebrate in Leipzig: Jubilee on the fall of Assad!
Last Sunday Leipzig experienced an impressive spectacle of humanity and political engagement. Two important events were organized: the Syrian community celebrated the fall of the Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad, while a broad alliance for democracy and human rights took to the streets. Loud Picture Around 5000 people took part in the spontaneous demonstration that moved from Eisenbahnstrasse to the city center. The Syrians celebrated the overthrow in their homeland with joy and pyrotechnics, while traffic in the city came to a standstill.
At the same time, around 11,000 people gathered on Augustusplatz to stand up for democracy, like that LVZ reported. Various demo trains started under the motto "Hand in hand for democracy and human rights" that joined together in front of the new town hall. The demonstration train was led by a civil society block, followed by unions and political groups. With creative signs and a lot of energy, the participants set a strong sign against racism and for solidarity together.
Peaceful together in the city
The participants of the Syrian celebrations and the demonstrations came for different backgrounds. At the Syrian demo there were many families with children who proudly bore the independence flag and celebrated their dream of freedom, while on the large demonstration participants from different cities, including 40 "Grandmas against right" from Hamburg. The police were on site with numerous emergency services, reports on violent clashes failed to materialize and the atmosphere remained peaceful.
These two events reflect the cultural diversity and political efforts in Leipzig. Both groups showed that the endeavor to freedom and democracy in the city is strongly anchored and that political commitment remains of central importance for many people. These demonstrations were not only a celebration, but also an appeal for a fairer society in Germany and beyond.
