Shots on diplomats in Israel: EU demands immediate information!

On May 21, 2025, there was an incident in the West Bank, near Dschenin, in which the Israeli military made shots towards a diplomatic delegation. According to these informed sources, the delegation consisted of diplomats from the European Union, including a German diplomat and a driver who worked for the representative office in Ramallah. Fortunately, nobody was injured even though the situation was tense.

The Federal Foreign Office in Germany has sharply condemned the incident and calls for a complete clarification of the circumstances. The Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said that the person concerned was during an official visit to the country who took place in coordination with the Israeli army. The diplomats were part of a convoy of about twenty clearly recognizable vehicles that moved on an approved route.

international reactions

EU foreign representative Kaja Kallas asked Israel to examine the incident and to hold the responsible persons to be accountable, and described the threat of life of diplomats as unacceptable. The French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot described the action as "unacceptable" and announced the order of the Israeli ambassador in France. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs also sentenced the incident and is in contact with other affected countries to react together.

The Israeli military said that the diplomats had left an approved route and entered an unauthorized area, which led to the perception that there was a threat. As a result, there were warning shots, while the Israeli army initiated an investigation and informed affected countries. Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul will address the circumstances of the incident to his Israeli counterpart.

The context of the region

In order to better understand the incident, it is important to look at the historical and political background of the region. The Oslo Agrees signed in 1993 had the goal of establishing the Palestinians' self -administration in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, as well as the withdrawal of Israelscher troops. These agreements are still significant, despite the continuing tensions and resistance to the peace process, which led to a continuous standstill in the negotiations.

Since the signing of the first Oslo contracts and the associated agreements, the conditions in the region have intensified, and incidents such as the current show the complex challenges with which diplomats and the international community are confronted. The incident in the West Bank could prove to be another stone in the way for potential agreement and the desired two-state solution.
