St. Pauli fails in Leipzig: mistakes cost DFB Cup dreams!
A drama in the DFB Cup! FC St. Pauli has to give up after an unfortunate 2-4 defeat against RB Leipzig in the second round. Hamburg showed in the first half that they were vulnerable defensively and took advantage of Leipzig mercilessly. Yussuf Poulsen was the main actor, scoring two goals and leading his team to victory. The quick deployment of Christoph Baumgartner and Antonio Nusa meant that the Hanseatic League were not rewarded despite intermediate goals from Morgan Guilavogui and Eric Smith.
Incorrect defense leads to defeat
As early as the 12th minute, a failed attempt at clearance by Eric Smith shocked the St. Paulians: Poulsen lurked and netted for an early lead. Baumgartner increased the score to 2-0 after a quick counterattack in the 17th minute. After a brief glimmer of hope from Guilavogui, who reduced the score to 1:2, Leipzig countered back. Poulsen restored the old distance in the 30th minute. Despite a passionate fight, the deficit was too great for the Kiezkickers and their dreams of progress faded.
In the second half, St. Pauli sniffed the equalizer when Smith sank a deflected shot. When hope blossomed, the neck was broken: Nusa grabbed the ball and finished with a brilliant solo to make it 4-2. A bitter evening for the brown-whites, who now have to focus on the Bundesliga, while Leipzig can reach the round of 16 of the cup.
