Return debate: Churches warn against haste with Syria refugees!
Amid the heated debates about migration and asylum policy, one topic is at the top of the agenda: the question of the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland. An explosive discussion that is characterized by countless emotions! The Protestant aid organizations Diakonie and Bread for the World are issuing a loud warning call - and for good reason!
The two organizations urgently warn against sending those seeking protection back before the necessary prerequisites for an orderly and voluntary return are created. "Just because the Assad regime has fallen does not mean that the humanitarian crisis ends overnight," emphasizes Martin Keßler, head of the Diakonie Disaster Aid. In addition, the Black Forest messenger that 16 million people in Syria are already dependent on help!
Syria on the crossroads
Dagmar Pruin, President of Brot for the world, follows up again: "A rushed return would conflict with the efforts of a peaceful and democratic future of Syria." The dramatic views of these aid agencies are a wake -up call to politics: This debate is not only a stress test for the refugees who have found a new home in Germany, but a challenge that could go wrong to return to chaotic conditions.
However, in recent days the CDU/CSU has made renewed calls for a quick repatriation. A storm of indignation? For sure! These demands, the churches argue, are a clear slap in the face of those Syrians who have built a new life here - doctors, pharmacists, craftsmen and many more.
Appeal for humanity and reason
The warnings from Diakonie and Bread for the World may sound harsh, but they are based on the determination of hard facts and an urgent appeal that such actions are questionable not only morally, but also in terms of peace and development policy. A hasty look back to Syria would put people in unnecessary danger!
Also the Stuttgart newspaper reports that despite the fall of the Assad regime, the balance of power in Syria is still unclear, which illustrates the urgent need for a stabilized environment. A race for quick solutions could harm more than benefit. The key lies in the sober analysis of the situation and in the effort for sustainable solutions for the refugees!
