PENNY saves sweets: New rescue bag now available!
PENNY has launched a new campaign package that plays an important role in its efforts to combat food waste. The so-called “Sweet Savior Bag” is now available in all branches and aims to make sensible use of seasonal excess stocks. It contains at least ten different confectionery items, which are offered at a price of 8 euros. The items can include both branded products and own brands. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by PENNY to tackle the immense food waste, which reaches around 635,000 tonnes annually in Austria.
Food waste occurs primarily in households, where bread, confectionery and baked goods make up the largest proportion. Oftentimes, seasonal products like candy are left on the shelves after the holidays, leading to overstocking. These excess stocks are put together by PENNY employees into the “Sweet Savior Bags”, which represent a sustainable solution to the problem of food waste. The measure promotes responsible use of resources and makes a valuable contribution to reducing waste.
A look at the background of food waste
The situation in Austria is part of a larger problem that exists in many countries. In Germany, around 10.8 million tons of food waste is generated every year along the entire food supply chain. Of this, 58 percent comes from private households, with each consumer throwing away an average of around 76 kilograms of food per year. The numbers illustrate the drive to reduce waste and show that retailers are also required to take measures to avoid food waste. The industry can make a significant contribution to reducing this waste through targeted campaigns, such as those implemented by PENNY with its new campaign package.
This problem not only affects retailers, but also society as a whole, as food waste raises not only economic but also ethical and ecological questions. Many initiatives in different countries, including food rescue movements, aim to raise consumer awareness of the value of food and reduce its waste.
The “Sweet Savior Bag” represents a small but significant step towards minimizing food waste and promoting conscious consumption. It should be noted that this package will not only be of interest to bargain hunters, but also contributes to more environmentally friendly behavior.
