Paragliding accident in Carinthia: Two female pilots injured!
An unfortunate paragliding incident occurred on Friday afternoon. Two women from Germany had an accident during their flights from Emberger Alm, drawing attention to the risks of this popular leisure activity. According to Klick Kärnten, both pilots went on different flights, which ended in serious injuries.
The first female paraglider pilot, a 33-year-old, set out with the aim of taking a leisure flight to Greifenburg. After a few minutes she lost control when she hit a treetop, causing a stall. The impact on a gravel road was severe, and after initial medical treatment she had to be flown by rescue helicopter to the hospital in Lienz.
Accident of the second pilot
The second pilot, a 37-year-old, followed with a thermal flight. After about half an hour of flight, she attempted to land in the Emberger Alm area. Unfortunately, when she landed, she hit the meadow too hard and fell. She also initially received medical help from the Greifenburg rescue service before she was transported to the hospital in Spittal an der Drau.
These incidents raise questions about how safe paragliding is compared to other air transportation methods. In contrast to the number of plane crashes that have fallen over the years, with 268 fatalities recorded worldwide in 2024, the risk of paragliding is still a serious matter. [Statista](https://de.statista.com/themen/129/ Flugzeugabrutsch/) shows that before the turn of the millennium, there were over 1,000 victims in plane crashes every year, while currently the accident rate in commercial aviation is considered low compared to driving.
Landing in particular represents a challenge for many pilots. In recent years, technical innovations such as landing assistants have helped to increase safety. However, it should be noted that many accidents occur during landing, partly due to angle and speed requirements.
A total of 870 aircraft crashes were recorded in the United States from 1945 to 2024, with no aircraft losses per million flights in 2024. In contrast, Africa had the highest rate with 1.78 losses per million flights in the same year. Statista also finds that American Airlines and Air France have the most crashes, while Emirates is considered the safest airline in the JACDEC Risk Index 2024.
The accidents of the two paraglider pilots remind us of the risks associated with flying, whether in a paraglider or in an airplane. However, the sport remains popular with many and it is important to always be mindful of safety and take appropriate precautions.
