Borussia Dortmund: Maximilian Beier fights for DFB chance!
Is the curse on the German national players at Borussia Dortmund real? Despite a wealth of DFB-experienced talent in the BVB squad, many are unable to make the jump to international matches. Maximilian Beier, who caused a sensation at the home European Championships, is now in the shadow of national coach Julian Nagelsmann and is fighting for his place.
BVB invested a whopping 28.5 million euros in Beier, who attracted attention with 16 goals at Hoffenheim last season and celebrated his debut in the national team. But the first few weeks in Dortmund were anything but easy. Behind Serhou Guirassy, Beier is only number two in the center of the attack. But after a strong performance as a winger, where he scored a goal and provided an assist in the 2-1 win against Borussia Dortmund, things seem to be looking up again.
Beier remains optimistic
Despite his impressive performances, Beier was not selected for the Nations League games against Bosnia and Hungary. Instead, another trip to the U21 is on the agenda. A bitter disappointment? Not for Beier! In a conversation with Nagelsmann, he received assurances that this step was “nothing bad.” Beier shouldn't be discouraged and knows that he needs playing time to develop further. The door to the national team remains open for him, even if other strikers such as Deniz Undav and Tim Kleindienst are currently the favorites. Beier could position himself as a U21 hopeful for the European Championships next summer.
