Woman finds 15,000 euros on the train: what happens to the money now!

An incredible story occurred in an ICE on the route from Hanover to Munich. A 33-year-old traveler found a bag with a whopping 15,000 euros in cash while getting out. The woman immediately contacted the federal police to report the found. However, the exact period in which the bag was on the train or whether it was previously left behind by someone else is unclear. After the arrival of the train, the officials took over the bag and began to count the entire content. So far, however, nobody has reported to claim ownership of the money. For the finder, this not only means that she has discovered a big bundle of money, but also that she is legally entitled to a finder, even if the money is first kept.

Legal aspects of the finder wage

The regulations on finding and lost property are anchored in the Civil Code (BGB). In § 965 BGB it is stipulated that the one becomes a finder who comes into possession of a found matter. Any movable thing can be a found matter. The finder has the obligation to report his find immediately, either to the owner or, if you know, to the responsible authority, such as a lost property office. If the finder violates his duty of notification, he can make himself punishable, possibly because of theft or embezzlement. The find remains the property of the original owner in the legal opinion.

The Finder also has a legally enforceable claim for finder wages in accordance with Section 971 (1) BGB. If the owner does not willingly come up for this reward, the finder can legally request it. However, certain regulations on the amount of the finding wage apply: at a value of up to 500 euros, this is 5 % of the value, for amounts over 500 euros the finder is 25 euros plus 3 % of the value that exceeds the amount of 500 euros. In public transport, the finder is only half of the normal value, provided that there are amounts over 50 euros.
