Borkum senior cats are looking for a new home in the Emden animal shelter!

Five semi-feral cats from Borkum are temporarily stranded in the Emden animal shelter - and urgently need a new home! The reason for this cat emergency? The animal shelter on the island is being remodeled and the shy seniors can't go back. These gray and brown beauties, aged between six and ten, face the challenge of finding a life on the mainland.

The situation is tricky because the cats were excluded from placement in Borkum due to bird protection measures. “They are no longer allowed to return to the island because of bird protection,” explains Jantke Tjaden, the head of the Emden animal shelter. These former islanders lived a life in the shelter, where they made themselves comfortable in their own space with tight hiding places and climbing opportunities. While some of these cats have already found new homes, the five remaining semi-feral cats are fighting for every morsel of freedom. Despite their reserve, the cats are house trained, vaccinated, neutered and chipped - they just need the right place to live out their hunting instincts.

A healthy home without fees

Jantke Tjaden hopes that the cats will find a rural home where they can prove themselves as mouse catchers. “A yard or large property with a permanent feeding area would be ideal,” she says. These cats have a lot to offer, including a blind cat who doesn't mind his limitations. Interested parties not only have to contact the Emder animal shelter, they can also be pleased that there is no surrender fee. “We’re just happy if the cats have a good old age,” adds Tjaden.
