Catholic voters choose differently: CDU strong, left weak!

The Bundestag election in Germany has shown a surprising picture regarding the distribution of votes among Catholics and Protestants. According to the current data from the research group elections, 39 percent of Catholic voters voted for the CDU/CSU, while this party received a total of 28.5 percent of the vote in the country. The support that the AfD received among Catholic voters is particularly striking at 18 percent, while its nationwide result was 20.8 percent. This was reported by the Catholic News Agency (KNA) and shows a clear decline in support for the left, which only received 5 percent of the vote among Catholics, compared to 8.8 percent in the total population.

European elections analysis

A similar picture emerged in the European elections. Here the CDU/CSU even received 43 percent among the Catholics, while it was only able to reach a total of 30 percent. One highlight was the AfD, which came to 12 percent among Catholics, while it achieved 15.9 percent nationwide. For Protestants, the research group reported that 14 percent voted for the AfD. Trust in the SPD was significantly lower for Catholic voters at 12 percent than with Protestants, where it came to 18 percent, while the total support for the SPD was 13.9 percent.

Another aspect affects the Greens, the support of which is 10 percent, which is close to the overall result of 11.9 percent. The FDP moved between 5 and 6 percent without significant differences between the groups. The Sahra Wagenknecht alliance only came to 3 percent among Catholics, while it received 6.2 percent nationwide. These results show that religious affiliation has a significant influence on the election decisions in Germany, the KNA reports.
