Hope in Germany: Syrian celebrate the end of the Assad regime

After the fall of the Assad regime on December 8th, there are new perspectives for Syrian refugees in Germany. The north German cities became enthusiastic when Syrians chanted their hope of a better future at demonstrations. However, initial votes from the Syrian community also express concerns about the future political situation in the home country, as there are ambiguities about the new government. Saudi al-mousllie, a prominent Syrian imam and oppositional, emphasizes the need to see all Syrian citizens alike and call for the persecution of the crimes of the old regime and other militias.

The relief over the fall of the regime is overshadowed by an uncertain political situation. Social worker Noura Labanieh and many other refugees take care of the humanitarian situation in Syria and the possible return to an authoritarian regime under Islamist groups. Labanieh explains that her relatives in Aleppo often have to live without water and electricity for days. Such circumstances lead to growing discomfort and a dislike of migration issues in Germany, as many fear that they are sent back to the insecure homeland.
