Hamburg's coal-fired power plant: Spectacular explosion marks farewell!
History is being written in Hamburg-Moorburg! On July 7, 2021, Europe's most modern coal-fired power plant was finally shut down after just six years of operation and massive construction costs of three billion euros. Enthusiastic Green Party supporters clapped with joy as the city prepares for a spectacular end to this mega-facility that was once able to power all of Hamburg.
Next Sunday, the chimneys of the flue gas desulfurization plant, which can be seen from afar, are on the program! The demolition will take place between 10 and 11 a.m. and will be observed by prominent politicians such as Economics Minister Robert Habeck and Environment and Energy Senator Jens Kerstan. Kerstan, a well-known opponent of the power plant, has long spoken out against the controversial project. “The time of coal power is over!” he could be heard as the big bang shakes the air.
New project: Green hydrogen for the future
After the demolition, the dismantling of the former Vattenfall coal-fired power plant continues. An electrolyser for green hydrogen is to be built on the site - a promising project that is intended to advance the energy transition. The 100-megawatt system will generate hydrogen and oxygen from wind power and water to supply the industry with sustainable energy.
Despite the high costs of around 300 million euros, of which 154 million euros come from federal funds, there are challenges: renowned companies such as Mitsubishi and Shell have already withdrawn from the project. Nevertheless, Robert Habeck remains optimistic and describes Moorburg as a “central point for the decarbonization of industry and the energy sector in Germany”. The future may be uncertain, but the ambitious plans for green hydrogen are a step in the right direction!
