MVV Energie from Mannheim was one of the first major providers to specifically name this date and stated that gas will no longer be delivered from 2035. However, this development is alarming, especially for those who have recently purchased a new gas heater. How Focus.de reported that these announcements will significantly reduce the cost-effectiveness of gas heating systems.

Consumer advocates are sounding the alarm

Consumer advocates are now demanding that gas customers be informed at least ten years before their gas networks are shut down. A spokesman for the Federal Association of Consumer Advice Centers emphasizes that consumers should no longer invest sensibly in new gas heating systems if they are already being replaced. This measure is in line with the goals of the federal government, which wants to become climate neutral by 2045, and represents a clear trend towards more sustainable heating alternatives such as heat pumps. Loud shz.de 48 percent of households in Germany currently heat with gas, so the switch to climate-friendly energy is urgently needed.

The new EU gas and hydrogen internal market directive forces gas network operators to submit decommissioning plans; these must be implemented into German law by 2026 at the latest. It is to be expected that more utilities will announce specific shutdown dates in the coming years. In addition, operating gas heating systems is becoming increasingly more expensive due to rising CO2 prices and falling user numbers, which means additional financial burdens for consumers. Experts therefore strongly recommend that, before purchasing new gas heaters, you carefully check whether they will be profitable until the end of their operating life.
