Peace light from Bethlehem: candle for hope illuminates Vienna

On December 14, 2024, Vienna will be the venue for the traditional international Peace Light Advent celebration, where the light lit in Christkindl, Upper Austria will be handed over to Boy Scout delegations from 20 countries. This ceremony in the Votivkirche is not only a festive occasion, but also an act of hope and community, as the motto “The God of hope fill us with peace and joy” embodies the central values. Around 1,500 participants are expected, including the “Peace Light Child” Matthias Secklehner, who will receive the light in the Christkindl pilgrimage church.

How bonifatius-wiesbaden.de reported that the Peace Light is also being spread in Germany, where the Boy Scouts bring it to numerous church communities, retirement homes and other facilities. The light shines in the hearts of many people and brings the message of peace into their living rooms. The annual transfer of the Light of Peace from Bethlehem to Vienna has been a tradition since 1986. The custom has now spread to many countries, underscoring the universal message of peace.

Due to the current geopolitical situation and restricted air traffic, the delegation trip to Bethlehem had to be canceled this year, similar to 2012, 2015 and 2023. However, hope remains alive as the light from Christkindl will begin its journey - ready to light up the world and carry a sign of peace to every corner of Europe, as it is kathpress.at highlights.
