Fire brigade warns: Citizens have to prepare for natural disasters!
In a current statement, the Fire Brigade Association Germany demanded that the population should better prepare for natural disasters. Association President Karl-Heinz Banse emphasized that citizens have to do more self-help, especially in view of the frequent flood events of the past. PZ-News reported that The fire brigade cannot be in use everywhere, which makes priorities necessary. Banse pointed out that many missions could be avoided if people were better preparing.
In the past, pumps and sandbags were often available to residents on rivers. Today, however, many rely on the fire brigade and call the emergency number 112. Banse therefore calls for a stronger topic of the population protection in the field of education. Schools should be encouraged to carry out fire protection education, as is already the case in many facilities. Students learn to behave properly there in emergencies such as floods, fires or earthquakes. The fire brigades are also visited to do educational work by the fire brigades. Furthermore, Banse demands more financial resources from the federal government to improve the equipment for floods and forest fires. A special program for population protection is also stimulated.
Climate change and population protection
Climate change brings new challenges for disaster prevention and management. According to information from Federal Environment Agency is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. The aim of the population is to protect the lives and health of citizens and to minimize material damage. The ensuring of the availability of critical infrastructures, such as energy and water supply as well as transport and telecommunications, is of central importance.
Efficient monitoring of extreme weather events and the missions of the aid organizations are required, as are the harmonization of data between different organizations and federal states. The further development of existing systems, such as severe weather systems or training programs, is necessary. Cooperation between different actors in population protection is essential to ensure an effective reaction to emergencies.
