Power plant project in Mellau: Citizens' initiative stops the project!

In a dramatic turn in the planned construction project of a small power plant on Mellenbach, the Illwerke VKW, represented by press spokesman Andreas Neuhauser, made the decision to suspend the project. Despite intensive discussions with the municipality of Mellau and with project opponents and supporters, no consensus could be achieved. Neuhauser emphasized that no small hydropower plant would be built without the approval of the location. The planned power plant should have enabled an annual generation of around 12 gigawatt hours of electricity and the Illwerke VKW in Vorarlberg basically see potential for up to 150 such systems, as reported by Vorarlberg.ORF.AT

Citizens' initiative defends itself against the project

The planned project encounters considerable resistance, which culminates in the establishment of a citizens' initiative. The initiators of the citizens' movement express concerns about the potential negative effects on the Mellenbach and the surrounding nature, which leads to persistent protests. These concerns were decisive for the decision of the Illwerke VKW to put the project on hold for the time being.
