Verden plans radical redesign of the pedestrian zone: join in!

The city of Verden is planning a comprehensive redesign of the pedestrian zone, which will be the largest of its kind since the introduction. According to Kreiszeitung aims to make the old town between the town hall and cathedral high school future-proof. On January 28, an information and investment event will take place in the council hall, in which the citizens are invited to bring in their suggestions. The city also plans to promote private investments.

The first ideas were already presented in summer. One of the long-term plans is the redesign of the Fischerviertel into a car-free tourism magnet and the conversion of the Augspurg-Platz into a green area. The careful development of Domplatz and Lugenstein as well as measures on the Sandberg are also on the agenda. The pedestrian zone is well received by the visitors, but it is checked to identify potential for improvement.

tight time frame and objectives

The time frame is tense because the catalog of measures must be submitted in Hanover by May/June. The goal is to participate in the 2026 urban development program for revitalizing the old town. The focus of the redesign is climate protection, the expansion of green areas, the improvement of open spaces and the renovation of private buildings to increase the quality of living and life. A planning office has already analyzed the city's neuralgic points.

The results and initial ideas will be presented on January 28 by the Lower Saxony country society. Citizens are again encouraged to actively contribute to urban development. The identified problems in the old town include a traffic-loaded thoroughfare, a confusing intersection at the east end of the South Bridge, as well as high degrees of sealing and a lack of green-blue infrastructure. There is also a dilapidated parking garage and limited parking space, which leads to heat loads on summer days.

A solution proposal provides for the lower street to make bicycle -friendly, which could bring an improvement in the traffic situation from Sandberg to the Domgymnasium.

at the same time reports sustainable-stadtentwicklung-hessen.de from the project " Foundation zone in the old town is supposed to redesign. The measures include the creation of a design guideline and manual as well as the introduction of a pedestrian control system. In addition, street coverings, furniture, greening and the design are to be upgraded.
