Animal cruelty scandal: Death of 69 cattle on the border with Türkiye!

A shocking animal transport scandal shakes Germany! The German Animal Welfare Association submitted a criminal complaint against a transport company after 69 pregnant cattle died on the Bulgarian-Turkish border. The animals, which were pounded in under extreme conditions without enough feed, water and space, suffered painfully before they died. According to Evelyn Ofelsberger, head of the legal department at the German Animal Welfare Association, entry into Turkey was rejected due to an import ban due to an outbreak of blue -fuel disease in Brandenburg. The transport company did not take any measures in its care to protect the animals, which led to their cruel death, reports the online portal LWZ24.de.

Horrific conditions and failure of the authorities

The cattle were to be transported from Brandenburg to the city of Konja, about 3,000 kilometers away, on September 12th. After rejection at the border, the animals were kept under catastrophic conditions for weeks, which resulted in not only the suffering of the mothers, but also that of their unborn calves. On October 15, the surviving animals were brought to a nearby slaughterhouse in a miserable state and brutally slaughtered there, as a message from the German Animal Welfare Association explains.

The incident also did political waves. Thomas Schröder, President of the German Animal Welfare Association, criticized the failure of the bureaucratic responsibilities between the federal, EU and the countries that made it impossible to return or relocate the animals. The specified draft for the amendment to the Animal Welfare Act does not contain a ban on living animal transports in third countries, which is also considered unacceptable, says Schröder. He urgently calls for a ban on these cruel transport practices, while the political groups in the Bundestag are currently advising on the Animal Welfare Act. The German Animal Welfare Association hopes for a complete clarification and an appropriate punishment for those responsible, as can be found on the website of the Animal Welfare Association.
