New schools for Wildau, Schönefeld and Bestensee: A reason to be happy!

In Lübben, an important decision was made in the Dahme-Spreewald district council on Wednesday evening: it was decided to build new schools in the communities of Wildau, Schönefeld and Bestensee. These developments come at a time when demand for school places in the region is soaring, underlining the urgency of this measure.

The plan for a four-class high school in Bestensee is particularly motivated by increasing student numbers, which are already demanding an additional offer for the 2025/26 school year. In the event that there are bottlenecks next school year, we will examine how the high school can be operated on a temporary basis. The responsible authorities hope that the construction of the new school will relieve the burden on the overburdened existing school locations in the north of the district.

A four-class high school in Wildau

Also on the agenda is the construction of a new four-room high school in Wildau, which also responds to an increasing number of students. Here too, the district council hopes to provide important relief for the neighboring schools. An additional three-class high school is being planned in Schönefeld, which will be completed by the 2026/27 school year. The move of the existing high school is already being planned to make space for the new school places.

Before the vote, Norbert Kleinwächter (AfD) raised his concerns about the naming of the Schönefeld high school, as it did not yet have an official name. The suggested namesake, Amy Johnson, a British aviation pioneer, was chosen by the school community. He argued that the name had no connection to the region. This was rejected by the administration, who pointed out the school's international orientation.

AfD politician criticizes the length of building permits

Another item on the agenda came from Reinhard Schulz (AfD), who criticized the long processing time for building permits in Brandenburg. He pointed out that the statutory deadline of two and a half months is often not met and is instead between six and twelve months. Alderman Heike Zettwitz replied that this was due to the comprehensive audits that must be implemented by the administration to take various factors such as environmental protection into account.

The changes in the school sector decided by the district council were generally received positively in the plenary session. Claudia Mollenschott (SPD/Greens/Left/We for KW/BIS) expressed her appreciation for the administration's efforts to overcome challenges in the education system.

The district council's decisions are aimed at making schools in the region future-proof and improving learning conditions for students. While the discussion about school development is ongoing, it remains to be seen how quickly the preparatory measures for construction can be taken.

Further reports and information are necessary for a more in-depth analysis of these topics, as the ongoing processes surrounding building permits and structural planning in the district are of central importance for the development of the region.
