Future of BHT: Move to Tegel should strengthen Berlin!

In a dramatic move, Berlin's Science Senator Ina Czyborra (SPD) has reiterated her support for the relocation of the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (BHT) to the former Tegel Airport. Despite financial austerity measures, she is optimistic that this step will be realized. “Berlin cannot afford to let this place fall into a slumber,” explained Czyborra during a visit to the former Terminal A. She underlined the need to actively use the location to promote the Urban Tech Republic and attract further scientific and commercial settlements.

The BHT is under pressure because there were fears that the move as a central element of the planned technology park in Tegel could fall by the wayside. President Julia Neuhaus warned urgently of the catastrophic consequences of a failed move: “We have to carry out renovation measures, we are missing over 20,000 square meters of space,” she emphasized. The move is scheduled for 2030 and is estimated to cost at least 450 million euros. Without this step, the university could be forced to close courses.

Political support for the move

The opposition has also jumped on the bandwagon and is vehemently demanding that the BHT move to Tegel be implemented. Tobias Schulze, parliamentary group leader of the Left, described the university as an indispensable “anchor” for the development of the area. “If that goes away, then there will be no motor for development,” warned Schulze, emphasizing that without the university the innovative Urban Tech Republic model project would be at risk. Time is running out and the future of BHT is in the balance!
