The Duisburg Ultras, who maintain an hostility with the supporters of the KFC Uerdingen, apparently assumed that they would meet like-minded people at the place of their attack. The GAK players quickly withdrew after the attack, but they remained unharmed.

background to fan friendship

The GAK fans have a friendship with the u anger, which makes the incident even more explosive. The rivalry between Duisburg and Uerdingen could now bring tensions into the fan landscape. This illustrates the fragility of fan cultures that are often shaped by rival relationships.

All the more important are initiatives for prevention of violence in football. The German Football Association (DFB) and its national associations are actively against violence in football. The “Fair is more” campaign bundles various measures to prevent violence and offer professional help.

Violence prevention in football

Recent incidents show how urgently such measures are required. A 15-year-old from Berlin hovers in mortal danger after a fight during an international youth football tournament in Frankfurt/Main. The DFB Vice President Ronny Zimmermann emphasized the need for violence prevention in amateur football and once again emphasized the importance of the support measures initiated by the DFB.

The violence prevention concept includes the promotion of Fair Play and the early detection of violence. Schools, trainers and players are informed in training courses and through information about the dangers of violence in football. In addition, there are contact points in each of the 21 state associations for those affected by violence and discrimination incidents.

social projects and commitment

The MSV Duisburg also offers

apart from violence prevention, such as a fundraising campaign during their home games. The aim is to produce an audio book about the life of the former player Michael Tönnies, whose eventful life story includes numerous ups and downs. The audio book and social projects are to be financed with donations. The fundraisers offer fans numerous opportunities to get involved.

These events illustrate how important violence prevention and social responsibility are in football. Fans and clubs are required to provide a positive and respectful atmosphere in the stadium together.
