New tiger in the Schönbrunner Zoo: hope for species protection!

The Schönbrunn zoo in Vienna caused a sensation with the arrival of a new female, a Siberian tiger. The animal comes from the Dutch Aquazoo Leeuwarden and was selected as a partner for the male tiger living in Vienna as part of the European Conservation Breeding Program (EEP). Tiergart director Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck explained that the Tiger, who was born in June 2023, now explores the outdoor enclosure after a careful getting used to. After a month -long preparatory process, which included special training, it can now also be seen for visitors. Particular attention was paid to dealing between the tigers because they are loners and the merging had to take place carefully. Dr. Hering-Hagenbeck expressed hope for young people, since the Siberian tiger is considered to be very endangered and the breeding programs make an important contribution to the preservation of the species.

Meanwhile, Berlin also experienced a joyful moment from the Tiger World when the Berlin zoo announced the birth of two female sumatra tigers. Tiger curator Matthias Papies proudly announced that the two young animals, who were the first time to investigate the vet, represent an important glimmer of hope for the endangered sumatra-tiger population. In the first eight weeks, the little tiger cats spent most of the time in their throwing cavity and briefly enjoyed the autumn sun. During the veterinary examination, their teeth and eyes were checked, a microchip was used and the weight was determined. With 5.79 and 5.99 kilograms you already show that you are thriving well.

hope for endangered species

The two events illustrate the efforts of zoological gardens to support the strongly endangered tiger populations with targeted breeding programs. While the tigers in the Schönbrunn Tiergarten hope for new litters, the small Sumatra tiger in Berlin stand as a sign of life and hope for a way threatened by extinction. So both the Viennese and the Berlin Zoo actively contribute to promoting the genetic diversity and survival of these majestic animals, such as the source of information from the krone and from Tagesspiegel report.
