Traffic release for B33 in the Wachau in sight before Easter!
A massive rock fall in the Wachau, which in mid -June 2024 had several thousand tons of rock onto the B33 and the Danube Cycle Path, has drastic consequences for the region. Since then, the road service and special companies have tirelessly worked on eliminating the faults. According to the notification of ORF Niederösterreich , the removal of the fall masses has now been completed. Josef Decker, the road construction director, expressed himself optimistic and said that massive use could be completed faster than planned. The focus is now on the last security measures before the traffic is released, with technical security measures in the slope area and the implementation of a temporary system called "Rock & Safe".
Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) described the upcoming restoration of the transport connection as a positive news, especially for the economy and tourism of the region. The authorities plan an inspection with experts to determine the further schedule. At the latest on March 3, 2025, work to the lower rope lock should begin. According to The press will last for several months, whereby the road will be sought complete by the next summer. The state has also announced a special funding of two to three million euros for companies affected by the lock in order to cushion a decline in the operating result due to the fall of the rock.
technical challenges and safety precautions
The road maintenance work is extremely challenging: the fall mass that stayed in the slope is unstable and continues to drive. The responsible authorities expect that this year will not be able to restore the transport connection between Aggsbach-Dorf and Aggstein, as Udo Landbauer (FPÖ) noted. Between June and December 2024, a temporary ferry for cyclists in Schönbühel-Aggsbach will be offered to avoid the blocked area. This measure is intended to relieve the traffic until the road can be passed again. The planned work and the associated financial aid show the commitment of those responsible to quickly revive the region and to meet the interests of the affected companies.
