Metallurgists in Berlin: Warning strikes put employers under pressure!
The metal and electrical industry is upside down! Around 20,000 metal workers stopped work in Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony. They stand up for their demands with a determination that is second to none. “This is a strong result,” Dirk Schulze, the district manager of IG Metall, proudly announces. The message is clear: employers must finally give in in the upcoming negotiations on Monday.
On Friday the time had come: There was a standstill at ZF in Brandenburg an der Havel, Clarios in Zwickau as well as at SKF, Hettich and the Siemens branches in Berlin and Leipzig. But this is just the beginning, as further warning strikes are planned for the coming week. The tension is rising because on Monday the IG Metall districts of the coast and Bavaria will meet with the employers in Hamburg for the fourth round of negotiations. IG Metall has commissioned the districts to find a solution to the collective bargaining dispute.
Negotiations in Hamburg: agreement in sight?
IG Metall's demands are clear: seven percent more pay and an increase in training allowances of 170 euros for a period of 12 months. In addition, social components should be achieved for lower income groups and more time sovereignty for employees. Employers, on the other hand, are proposing nine zero months, followed by a wage increase of 1.7 percent on July 1, 2025 and 1.9 percent on July 1, 2026, with a term of 27 months. The negotiations in Hamburg could be crucial because, in the event of an agreement, the IG Metall board will meet to decide on a takeover recommendation for all districts.
