Vienna celebrates Johann Strauss: Waldmeister conquers the stage!

Halle E, MuseumsQuartier Wien, 1070 Wien, Österreich - On April 10, 2025, the operetta "Waldmeister" by Johann Strauss II will be premiered in the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. This staging forms part of the celebrations in the anniversary year of Johann Strauss 2025 in Vienna. Directed by Josef E. Köpplinger, who reinterprets the well-known operetta as a subversive screwball comedy. Chamber actress Robert Meyer takes on the role of official chief Christof Heffele, while the ensemble comprises several other talents, including chamber singer Daniel Prohaska and Anna-Katharina Tonauer.

The plot of "Waldmeister" plays in a dramatic scenery in which a group of young people escapes to a forest mill in front of a storm. Here there are chaotic complications around Oberforstrat Tymoleon, who mistakenly considers Pauline to be the miller, and the lovechaos between different characters unfolds. Musically, the staging, under the musical direction of Michael Brandstätter, offers a wealth of highlights that go beyond the known overture. In this version, too, the director wants to celebrate the joy of the delight for which Johann Strauss is known.

guest performance in Vienna

After the premiere in Munich, “Waldmeister” will also be shown in Vienna, namely on 25, 27 and 28 April 2025. What is special about this staging is the implementation in German, supplemented by overtitles in German and English. Tickets are already available from 19 euros and can be purchased as part of the Vienna Ticket Easter campaign 1+1 by April 21, 2025.

historical context of the operetta

"Waldmeister" was written a good twenty years after the famous operetta "The Bat" by Johann Strauss II (1825–1899). This operetta is part of a larger work of the composer who plays an important role in Viennese music history. In addition to "woodruff", his work includes numerous other operettas, which were often premiered in Vienna. The list of his works is extensive and shows its versatility and the influence that its music still has.

The guest performance in Vienna not only confirms the relevance of Johann Strauss II, but also promotes the cultural connection between Munich and Vienna as part of the celebrations to its work. The new production of the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz promises an entertaining and exciting experience for operetta lovers and theater visitors alike.
