Car crashes into Munich demonstration: 28 injured, are children among the victims?
In a shocking incident in Munich today, a car was driven during a Demonstration by the Verdi union in a group of people. At around 10:30 a.m., a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker raced past a police checkpoint in his vehicle and drove over the end of the demonstration at Stiglmaierplatz. At least 28 people, including children, were injured in this suspected attack. Some of the injured are in mortal danger, as Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) confirmed.
The police quickly arrived and arrested the driver; Warning shots also had to be fired. According to statements by Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU), it is a “suspected attack”. The exact background is still unclear, but it is known that the suspect is known to the police and had previously been noticed for shoplifting and a drug offense. In addition, there has so far been no evidence of anyone else involved.
Investigations are ongoing
The investigation has already been taken over by the Bavarian Central Office for Extremism and Terrorism. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) said that there are currently no signs of a connection to the upcoming security conferences in the city. Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for tough action against the perpetrator and emphasized that such crimes must not be tolerated. Meanwhile, the Verdi union made it clear that the ongoing warning strikes demanding higher pay should not be affected by this incident.
The police have also set up an internet portal to collect relevant videos and information from witnesses in order to better investigate the incident. The events on Stiglmaierplatz raise urgent questions that concern both security at public gatherings and how to deal with asylum seekers who have been rejected News.de reports.
