In Vienna, a new chapter of sustainability with the "greenest" Billa Markt in Austria in Pilotengasse 76. After more than 30 years, the old location will be closed from May 25, 2024 to make room for a modern building that sets a variety of environmental standards. This revolutionary project will not only put energy efficiency in the foreground, but will also serve as a model for the entire industry. As the Austrian news reported, the new market will be operated thanks to a photovoltaic system and heat pump technology, which is to be largely independent of fossil fuels.
Sustainable construction and innovative measures
The new building is characterized by the use of certified wooden building materials from domestic production and comprehensive greening measures are carried out. Marcel Haraszti, board member of REWE International AG, explained that the beer garden, a green roof and sealing -free areas are planned to promote biodiversity and to reduce the Urban Heat Island effect. These details come from the specially developed Billa greenery manual, which defines all ecological standards for the design of markets, such as Rewe Group reported.
The new building will be announced on about 990 m² of sales space: supply with freshest seasonal and regional products inside. The focus is also on unpacked organic products to reduce packaging waste. In addition, an Ottakringer Fass beer station is set up, which enables customers to tap their beer in reusable bottles themselves.
With this investment of around 54 million euros in Vienna, Billa will not only revolutionize his own business model, but also make a valuable contribution to the Viennese economy. The demolition work at the old location begins on May 29, 2024, while a reconstruction in the inviting and ecological design is scheduled for the end of November 2024. The 23 employees: Inside the old market, the region will continue to be employed and thus benefit from the development. This new market will therefore not only enjoy the senses, but also a symbol of the initiative to promote sustainability in retail.
