Free light test in October: drive safely through the darkness!
In October, drivers in Germany have the opportunity to have the lighting of their vehicles checked free of charge. This campaign, which is organized by the German Verkehrswacht (DVW) and the Central Association of German Motor Vehicle Industry (ZDK), is under the motto "Safe through the darkness". The free light test is a proven initiative that has existed since 1956 and aims to reduce the risk of accidents in the dark season.
Last year, every fourth car had defects in the lighting system. This made a review particularly important because functioning lights contribute to the safety in road traffic. During the campaign, drivers can have their entire light system checked in participating workshops. If everything is OK, you will receive the well-known light test badge attached to the windscreen. This badge not only signals the proper functioning of the lighting, but can also be important for traffic controls.
The most common defects
Every year, thousands of defect reports are sent to the DVW, which are uncovered in these quality tests. There are particularly often problems with the front lumps, which are often not set correctly: either they dazzle oncoming traffic or they are set too low, which significantly reduces the visibility. Defective headlights are also repeatedly determined, which significantly increases the dangers in road traffic.
The traffic watch has a long story that started over 100 years ago. It was founded to promote traffic safety in Germany and take preventive measures. After an interruption during National Socialism, the DVW was newly founded at the end of the 1950s and initiated numerous important projects that ranged from school pilots to school traffic education. The light test is just one of many examples of this successful prevention work.
Every year, millions of drivers take part in this light test and thus contribute to one of the largest traffic safety actions in Germany. The free review in October offers a valuable opportunity to check your own vehicle lighting for defects and thus make a contribution to security on the streets. In order to take advantage of participation in the campaign, interested parties can contact the participating workshops.
