Number of homeless people exploded in Brazil - alarming trends!
The situation of homelessness achieves worrying proportions: in Brazil and Germany the numbers rise dramatically. In Brazil, official statistics report that the number of homeless people increase to around 140,000 in 2024, while it was around 100,000 in the previous year. This increase is partly the result of better detection methods by state institutions, as Andre Luiz Freitas Dias from the observation center for homeless explained. However, the positive development is overshadowed by the negative fact that missing, effective state programs to combat poverty in the poverty significantly contribute to the situation. By 2013, only about 11,000 homeless people were registered, but from 2014 the economic crisis led to millions of Brazilians falling into poverty, which resulted in the alarming increase in the following years, as well as the Kleine Zeitung reported.
In comparison, Germany also records worrying numbers. According to the latest statistics from Statista , over 400,000 people lived in 2022 without a fixed stand since 1995. It is worrying that the number of homeless people in Germany has increased continuously since 1995. Homelessness often affects particularly vulnerable groups, including people with low income and those without school education. These developments throw a bright light on the challenges that both Brazil and Germany face in the fight against homelessness and social inequality.
People who are weak are particularly affected: In Brazil, around 70 percent of the homeless have no completed school education and around 11 percent are considered illiterate. These figures illustrate how crucial education and social programs are to effectively combat homelessness. It remains to be hoped that those responsible recognize the pressing problems in both countries and take targeted measures to counter these tragic developments.
