Students set sail for education: lessons in the middle of the Atlantic!
34 students from all over Germany are currently taking part in a unique educational project that takes place on the sailing ship "Thor Heyerdahl". As part of the project with the name "Classroom under sailing" (KUS), the students are on the Atlantic for half a year. This innovative way of teaching offers young people the opportunity to learn subjects such as German, chemistry and geography from a completely new perspective.
Among the participants is Anton, 15 years old, who last saw his family in October in Dänischenhagen near Kiel and is currently in Panama. The stay on the ship requires the students to learn important life skills such as space management, self -care and time management. Anton spends Christmas for the first time without his family, in the Caribbean sea north of Curaçao. While he's in Panama, he experiences a temperature of 31.5 degrees air and 29.5 degrees water temperature, while it is cold and rainy at home.
planned activities and accommodation
After crossing the Atlantic, the students will stay in Panama for three weeks, where different activities are planned. This includes a camp in the rainforest and Spanish lessons. During their stay, the students will live in host families, which should help them to dive deeply into the local culture and to reflect on their own origin. The students are accompanied by several educators, including Corinna Göpfert.
The entire project has costs of around 25,000 euros, which means around 3,770 euros per month. These costs cover catering, accommodation, lessons, land stays and medical care. The participants receive financial support from interest -free loans or scholarships provided by a donation -financed support association. To participate, the students have to present a good certificate and show openness to other cultures and social commitment. The return trip is planned for April, with the group returning to Kiel via Cuba and the Azores.
The Summerschool trips that represent a supplement to this educational project take place in nature, both on the sea and on land. These trips emerged from the “Classroom under sailing” project and aim to promote holistic education and education. Problems in natural science and sailor are dealt with in these trips with the aim of conveying fun, team spirit, team spirit and personal development, as kus-projekt.de reports.
