Return trip horror: traffic jams and waiting times at the end of the holiday in Austria!

On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, numerous travelers return home from the summer vacation. The ÖAMTC reports that in Western Austria, among the affected federal states, Vorarlberg, Tyrol, Carinthia, Styria, Salzburg and Upper Austria are among others. This leads to a strong wave of return, which can be felt not only on routes in Austria, but also on important transport connections to Germany.

South-north and east-west connections that have to expect increased traffic are particularly affected. There are considerable waiting times to be expected at the borders to Germany, especially at the Karawanken tunnel, playing field and Nickelsdorf. In addition, many late vacationers travel south on Saturday, which also contains the return travel traffic.

Stau forecasts and traffic problems

The main strain in Austria is the Tauern Autobahn (A10), which is particularly frequented in tunnels and toll areas. Other motorways that will be affected by traffic problems are:

  • Brenner Autobahn (A13)
  • Pyhrn Autobahn (A9)
  • West Autobahn (A1)

A look at the bottleneck points shows that there are delays in the following locations:

Highway Area
A1 From Border Walserberg to Knot Salzburg
A2 Between Gleisdorf and Sinabelkirchen, From Guntramsdorf Towards Vienna
A4 In Front of Nickelsdorf Border, from Schwechat Towards Vienna
A9 Knot St. Michael, in Front of Gleinalm Tunnel, Border Playing Field

Special events and additional traffic disorders

In addition to the end of the vacation to the end of the holiday, local events such as the European Bike Week 2025, in which up to 100,000 motorcycle fans in the greater Faaker See area are expected until September 7, 2025, further traffic problems. The autumn fair Dornbirn, which lasts until September 7, 2025, could also lead to delays in the access roads.

The ADAC traffic information points out that the first weekend in September in Germany is also associated with numerous traffic jams and full highways. In five German federal states, including Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein and in five Austrian federal states, the holidays end, which makes it even more difficult to return. Particularly strong stowities are expected on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon.

These traffic jams are not only due to the return trip of holidaymakers, but also on weekend trippers and mountain hikers. The ADAC recommends travelers to keep their travel dates as flexible as possible in order to travel on the less frequented days from Tuesday to Thursday. Construction sites and passage bans on important motorways, such as the A8 and A93, do not make the situation easier. The non -compliance with the regulations on the formation of emergency leases can result in high fines, which could also affect traffic safety.

Overall, it is advisable to prepare well for the return trip to minimize the inconvenience through traffic disorders.

The ÖAMTC recommends watching traffic forecasts carefully and, if necessary, planning alternative routes in order to make the return trip as smoothly as possible. For detailed information on the expected traffic conditions, visit ÖAMTC and ADAC.
