Climate crisis meets children: Vienna accelerates measures to protect!

In the Vienna state parliament, a session took place on September 23, 2025, which dealt with numerous important topics. LAbg. Mag. Nina Abrahamczik (SPÖ) underlined the connection between the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis and emphasized the importance of butterfly -friendly plants. The nature conservation report was accepted unanimously, while the protection regulations for the field hamster and the species -appropriate attitude of parrots are also concerned of Abrahamczik. In order to train future owners in a practical way, mandatory courses are to be introduced, as Presse Vienna reports.

LAbg. Michael Niegl (FPÖ), on the other hand, expressed a skepticism about a draft law to amend the Vienna Wohnbaufförderungs- und Home renovation law. He warned of competition from alternative energy sources to natural gas and doubted the human influence on global warming. Above all, his concerns were the potentially high costs that could arise from changes in residential construction.

Children in the focus of the climate crisis

In addition, the topic of children's rights was addressed in the state parliament. LAbg. David Ellensohn (Greens) criticized the recent reduction in support for children of minimum security recipients. In Vienna, over 100,000 children are at risk of poverty. Ellensohn demanded that wealthy be held more responsible. The urgent request from the Greens was office. Str Peter Hacker (SPÖ) answered, which announced a legislative template to change the minimum security. In August 2025 there were 20,984 communities in Vienna with minor household members. In the past six months there have been 1,133 consultations for impending performance settings, which, however, did not concern the children themselves.

According to Unicef, the global climate crisis is a serious threat to the future of all children. Children often do not have enough access to clean water, many go to bed hungry. In addition, due to extreme weather events and unsightly social security in their home countries, they are particularly vulnerable, which has a negative impact on areas such as health, education and nutrition. Almost half of all children worldwide are extremely at risk from the effects of climate change, as [Unicef reports] (https://www.unicef.de/informieren/ Einsatz-fuer- Kinderrechte/Klimawandelundkinderrecht).

Effects of climate change on children

Pediatricians and organizations in Germany warn that the children's rights are at risk from climate change. You need a healthy and safe environment. In an example from the daycare center "Wilde 13" in Landau, protection against heat and UV radiation was reinforced by the installation of sun sailing. In view of increasing temperatures, the professional association of pediatricians (BVKJ) calls for comprehensive protection concepts for day care centers and schools. Joachim Türk from the Child Protection Association also emphasizes that climate policy has to be geared towards the interests of the children in order to protect their rights sustainably. A quick decline in greenhouse gas emissions is necessary to secure the health of the children, as Tagesschau reports.

The events in the Vienna Landtag and the current challenges of climate change clearly show that decisive action is required to ensure the rights of children and the care of nature.
