Education crisis in Saxony-Anhalt: Cities mobilize against new school law!

in Saxony-Anhalt is bubbling because of a new school law, which is heavily criticized by the mayors of the cities of Halle, Magdeburg and Dessau. The planned reform of Minister of Education Eva Feussner (CDU) stipulates that school entrance classes in state institutions must have at least 25 students from August 1, 2027. That would mean that numerous schools in Halle, including ten primary schools and four further, could be before the closure, such as the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung reported.

The mayors concerned described the changes as radical interference with the school landscape, which was difficult for citizens to convey. In a joint letter to the state government and the parliamentary groups, they appealed not to adopt the law in the present form. The reasoning is based on the challenges of the lack of teachers and falling school numbers, which are not addressed sustainably with the increase in minimum number of students. "The current amendment would not meet the requirements for a modern education system," said the mayor. At the same time, they emphasized that the original conversations with the minister provided a different approach, which was now adapted unilaterally for the upper centers.

resistance of the opposition

The opposition in the state parliament is also against the new regulations. Oliver Kirchner from the AfD parliamentary group calls for a fundamental turn in school policy, while Olaf Meister of the Greens described the law as "completely unbalanced". In particular, he criticized the fact that recently renovated schools could no longer meet the new requirements. Thomas Lippmann from the DIE LINKE parliamentary group even goes so far as to describe the law as a "attack on school structures" and calls for the cancellation of fixed class sizes from the regulation. According to the mdr , many fear that the law could also endanger.
