Registration for Vienna's children's and youth parliament: Apply now!
On September 13, 2025, the start of the registration phase for the Vienna Children's and Youth Parliament marked 2025/26. This phase falls on the international day of democracy and offers a platform for active participation and political participation. Registration is possible from September 15 to October 24, 2025.
This extensive project is aimed at kindergarten groups, school classes and young people. Vice Mayor Bettina Emmerling emphasizes the importance of the active participation of young people and emphasizes that the city of Vienna has the aim of becoming the most child and youth-friendly city in the world, as is determined in the Vienna Child and Youth Strategy 2025–2030.
Structure and expiry of the parliament
The children's and youth parliament enables young people to contribute their concerns and to develop measures together. The meetings take place between November 2025 and April 2026 and include a kick-off and introductory date, thematic committees and the involvement of experts. The final event will be held in the Vienna town hall.
The conditions of participation are clearly defined: For the children's parliament, groups can take part in the last year of kindergarten and school classes up to the 8th school level, whereby the participants are selected using lottery. Young people between the ages of 14 and 20 can register individually for the youth parliament. Every year, around 300 young people take part in this program, which is organized by the Junge Vienna coordination office near Wienxtra. Further information on the event can be found here.
Additional offers for democracy education
Wienxtra not only offers the children's and youth parliament, but also special democracy workshops for school classes in order to further promote political education. The workshops include "Democracy things" for the 1st to 6th school level and "Plant di Ned!" For students from the 7th school level, both free of charge.
These programs are part of a comprehensive approach to promoting democracy experiences for young people. The German Children's and Youth Foundation (DKJS) emphasizes the importance of such projects in its publication on cooperative democracy education. It offers reflection tools that are supposed to stimulate the self -assessment and further development of democracy projects. The DKJS has been cooperating in the competence network "Democracy education in adolescence" since 2020 and pursues the goal of strengthening a democratic culture in educational institutions. You can find out more about this in the publication [here] (https://www.dkjs.de/publika/cocoperative democracy education-fuer-jungsmenschen/).
Overall, the Vienna Children's and Youth Parliament not only offers a platform for political participation, but also actively promotes democracy education in the city of Vienna. The approach combines schools, municipalities and organizations to give young people the opportunity to actively affect their city and to raise their voices.
