The Southeast Tangent (A23) in Vienna represents the most frequented street in Austria, with around 230,000 vehicles per day in the section between Prater node and the Handelskai junction. These days, however, traffic suffers from extensive renovation work, which are carried out in both directions. The main construction measure in the direction of travel has already started. The aim is to improve the existing structures and to defuse the traffic situation in the long term.

Visitors and commuters must expect daily traffic jams and delays, in particular to the tips of the traffic and on weekends. A bypassing via Stadionallee is currently not useful due to construction work in the stadium bridge area, since disabilities can also be expected there. In order to facilitate orientation during this time, a coloring system is used to help drivers better understand the current traffic tours.

Details of construction site planning

The progress of the renovation measures on the A23 takes place in three phases. In the first phase, the construction site is set up on the right, which is expected to take ten weeks. The construction site then hikes in the middle for two weeks, with the Handelskai exit for vehicles being closed on the three left -hand traces. In the last phase, the construction site is positioned on the far left for a week, so that three lanes lead past the construction site. During the work, the bypass ramp is blocked in the direction of Handelskai at the Prater knot, while the departure towards the center remains open.

After the work was carried out in full implementation in the direction of travel, the construction site in the direction of travel south will be handled in the same sequence from June 23. The subsequent renovations of the Prater and Handelskai junctions are also planned for a winter break from October 2025 to March 2026. The expected completion of the entire measures is expected for the end of August 2026. The details of these large -scale construction projects come from ASFINAG, which is responsible for the administration and maintenance of the Austrian road network.

At the local level, municipalities spend an average of ten percent of their budget for road construction, maintenance and operation, which underlines the importance of the traffic infrastructure in national planning.
