Treasure from ruins: thousands of D-Mark for reconstruction of the Friedenskirche!
München, Deutschland - Munich, March 18, 2025-Several thousand D-Marks were discovered in an astonishing find in the remains of the east-west fried church in the Olympic Park burned down in June 2023. During clearing work, workers came across the money that was hidden in plastic bags and tin cans, such as the Münchner evening newspaper reported. This unexpected discovery is now largely used for the reconstruction of the church, which Munich's former mayor Christian Ude pleased. "We are doing everything we can to the fact that the church can be reproduced this year," emphasized Ude, who acts as the patron of the Church's sponsoring association.
In addition to the money, other interesting finds were also made, including three bells and a charred statue of Mary. These remnants from the past help to keep the history of these church built in the 1950s, which has a symbolic meaning for the unity of all Christians, as Ude explained. The fire, which almost completely destroyed the church, was probably caused by a technical defect.
reconstruction plans started
In an optimistic turn, Ude now sees things for the reconstruction positively: "Due to the digital measurement of the Church, we were lucky that the data is now available for a faithful replica." In addition, insurance has promised an unexpectedly high amount of reconstruction, which significantly relieves financial concerns. Ude is confident that there will be no approval problems, since the local building commission has given permission to reconcile it.
A newly founded association under the direction of Sergej Kaiser will take care of the reconstruction and care of the church. Ude plans to integrate supporters from the neighborhood from autumn in order to further promote the initiative. The schedule stipulates that the debris will be removed in October to create space for the reconstruction. "We firmly assume that we will be able to start building next year," said Ude optimistic. This could soon shine an important piece of city history in new splendor.
