Bridges for the future: construction of the valley crossings on the S31 started!
Sieggraben, Österreich - The construction of the new valley crossings on the S31 Burgenland expressway near Sieggraben picks up speed. According to ORF Burgenland , about 20,000 vehicles are counted every day on this busy road, which means that the urgent need for improvements is evident. The construction work for the four new bridges was started in March 2023 and are part of a comprehensive safety expansion that started ten years ago. Despite challenges such as delivery bottlenecks by the Coronavirus pandemic and increasing steel prices as a result of the Ukraine secretary, the construction teams under the direction of ASFINAG site manager Harald Mayer show impressive effectiveness. The entire project, which is estimated at around 80 million euros, is to be completed by 2026.
construction progress and challenges
As part of the extensive project, around 11,500 running meters of drilling piles and over 37,000 cubic meters of concrete are installed, while the challenges by the edition of the Area cannot be underestimated. Meinzirk.at reports that the earthworks in the steep area have to move around 54,000 cubic meters, which theoretically corresponds more than 5,000 Truck drivers. In order to protect the environment, ASFINAG relies on sustainable building practices by reuse and recycling existing material. During the entire construction project, the ecological building supervision is also guaranteed to protect the flora and fauna on site.
Traffic on the S31 runs over two traces in the direction of Oberpullendorf and a trail in the opposite direction to offer drivers safe overtaking opportunities. This security expansion is not only necessary, but also a significant investment in the transport infrastructure, which is estimated at around 72 million euros for the phase between Mattersburg and Weppersdorf. In addition, with a new alliance contract, ASFINAG tries to implement an innovative contract model, which is shared the risks and participation of success between the client and the contractor, which is becoming more important in the construction industry.
