165 million euros for asylum colossus: Berlin accommodation causes excitement!

Berlin plans to build a new asylum accommodation for 165 million euros, which should offer space for up to 1,500 migrants from 2026. The planned location is an empty office complex in Berlin-Kreuzberg, which extends over 33,000 square meters. This costly investment is part of the efforts to meet the continuing migration to Germany. The annual costs for the accommodation of asylum seekers in Berlin already amount to one billion euros, which is due to the high demand for accommodations. According to Exxpress.at , the rental agreement for the new accommodation has already been approved by the Berlin House of Representatives.

The rental costs for the new complex will amount to around 26.54 euros per square meter of net rent plus 10 euros per square meter for operating and additional costs. In total, the rental costs will be around 164.5 million euros by December 31, 2035. The monthly expenses are expected to exceed 1.2 million euros. The renovation work in the complex has already started at this point. Concerned residents are critical of the planning because they were not included in the process.

financial perspectives and challenges

In addition to the high costs for the new accommodation, the Berlin Senate plans to incorporate an emergency loan to finance the running costs for refugees. Economic Senator Franziska Giffey has already initiated measures in this regard. There are currently a total of 128 asylum accommodations in Berlin, which are distributed across all twelve districts. An important aspect of this planning is the intention of the Senate to accommodate unaccompanied minor refugees aged 14 and over.

The financial burdens from asylum migration are enormous. In 2023, the federal states spent around 6.3 billion euros for the services in accordance with the Asylum Seekers Benefit Act, as

demographic developments

The number of people, which relates to control services in Germany, has increased in recent years. At the end of 2022 there were around 486,100 people, compared to 399,000 in 2021. The high number of migrants and the large number of asylum procedures are a constant challenge for German politics, which already spent 28.4 billion euros on refugee -related expenses in 2022.

With the creation of new accommodations and the necessary financial support, Berlin tries to meet the growing requirements in the asylum area. The developments of the coming years will be decisive for how the situation will be for migrants and residents in the capital.
